Like everything we do at The Bower, it was a team effort starting with the bespoke design from our architect John Burgess, the green thumb of Dan from Elemental Gardens, and of course our mainstay, Greg Lyon Constructions who guided the project throughout its construction.
The vision was to create a 5 Star tropical pool oasis that echoed The Bower’s design theme of tropical beach modernity with a decisive New York twist and that’s exactly what we achieved. The pale grey concrete terrace surrounding the perfectly round pool blends seamlessly with the soft blue/green glass bead internal finish making the pool appear to be carved out of its surrounds. The sweeping, gently curved steps and shallow beach is the place to sit and chill, with a special drop from our new Bower mini bar menu. Maybe it’s the Zen-like outdoor rain shower nestled into the tropical garden, abundant with Heliconias, Kentia, Bangalow, Rhapis and Cabbage Palms or the individual private booths, separated by tables and billowing curtains which will beckon for a few quiet hours soaking up the Byron sun.
Undoubtedly it’s a combination of all of these things that saw SPASA award The Bower pool the best commercial project of the year from all of the submissions they received Australia-wide. We had a chat with Suncatcher Pools to get their take on executing such a masterful creation right in the middle of a busy luxury holiday compound.
Is there a difference between building for a domestic environment and a commercial environment?
Yeah for sure! The timelines and work schedules are much tighter because you’re working in a fully operational hotel environment. But the end result feels more rewarding.
Tell us about the building process starting with building round. That can't be easy!
We worked closely with Greg Lyon Construction, and together we mastered the perfectly round shape. It certainly wasn’t easy, but look at the outcome!
What were the challenges you had to overcome building the pool from scratch in the middle of a fully operational hotel?
Meeting deadlines and being constantly considerate of interfering with guests’ enjoyment of their holidays, particularly with respect to noise, were the biggest challenges, as well as the logistics of getting machinery in and out of the premises. But all in all, it was managed really well and the project just flowed from start to finish.
What makes the Bower pool award-winning?
Definitely the round shape. It’s so eye catching, so different and a real stand out from other projects we’ve done! The generous curved steps and the large palms and creative landscaping make it so photogenic. The drone shots in particular are just fabulous. Of course the pool has all the bells and whistles with in-floor cleaning, heating, liquid pool cover and it’s a mineral salt pool too.
And mineral pools over other pools? Is it worth the cost?
Mineral pools are a nicer swim experience. You can definitely feel the difference to normal salt pools. A mineral pool relieves stress, reduces aches and pains and is much gentler on your skin. Feedback from clients who have mineral definitely say its worth the cost.
Your favourite drinks and nibbles to have beside any pool - particularly in Byron.
Spring is here and the weather is just glorious at this time of year. So pass me a sour cocktail with Brookies Gin in it and a dozen cold natural oysters and we are done!!!
