BYRON: Our Top 10 Homewares Stores

An award-winning design hub located just outside the booming Arts and Industry Estate where you can eat, drink, shop and play. It’s a destination in itself where you can explore some of Byron’s best homeware stores including some of our favs like Ha’veli, Dharma Door and Tigmi Trading, where you’ll find vintage and unique Moroccan rugs including Beni Ourain, Azilal, Boujad and Kilim. There are retailers offering dried and fresh flowers, candles and ceramics, cushions, throws, rugs, baskets, planters, photo frames, art and a myriad of other things to spark your décor. While you’re at Habitat, go and have a peek at One Teaspoon, The Beach People, Annukka Byron Bay, St Agni or Department of Simple Things, where you’ll find everything a man could ask for -luggage, clothing, outdoor and camping goods, an in-house barber, boutique beers and food. Habitat’s a must, and expect to lose at least one lazy Byron day there.

Welcome to Nikau (nee-co) which is a dream come true for indoor plant lovers as well as those with a passion for ceramics, woven hanging planters and light fittings, textured cushions, basket, candles, body oils, room sprays incense, artwork, and greenery. It’s the brainchild of Nikki (flower boss and botanical stylist) and Nicole (designer and ceramicist) who are obsessed with green, floral and ceramic. They also love functional, sustainable and original handmade design. Their ceramics include a beautiful selection of softly glazed ceramics, crockery, planters and unusually shaped vases which embrace the Japanese notion of wabi-sabi and its appreciation of imperfections. They also sell an abundance of freshly-picked flowers and offer floral styling workshops too with the next one on January 5.

Hope & May shares The Bower’s passion for a neutral palette, loads of texture, squishy linens and classic style with a twist. Homewares-wise we’re loving their artisan woven baskets, timber trays and bowls, the softest waffle towels and patchouli and woods scented candles. They also stock some of our fav clothing brands – Peony Swimwear, Lilya, Faithfull The Brand, Levis and Kinga Csilla whose new range of soft muslin dresses and tops are just divine. And they have beautiful fine jewellery from cult brands such as Babyanything and Brie Leon too. It’s a shopping spree under one roof.

Ha’veli is a mix of intricate, earthy tribal Indian and Balinese antiques, furniture, hemp and jute rugs and textiles as well as a wonderful selection of small trinket pieces to add personality to any room – vintage cow bells, wall hangings, carved timber candle holders and so much more. Some of the pieces are seriously big such as hand-carved bed heads and vintage carved doors and mirrors. They’re the statement pieces that Heidi, Ha’veli’ owner/creative, likes to include in her ideal décor which starts with a clean, modern white space and then turns into a home that feels like you’ve just walked up from the beach. That’s our kind of space. PS It’s worth the trip just to meet Honey, the Border Collie. True story!

The Bower Cottage has one and we love it. That is a classic rattan hanging chair. It’s just the best for kicking up your feet and swinging the afternoon away and comes in the classic shapes of mid last century. They also do intricate day beds, bassinets, kids beds, bar carts, tables, planters and even mini-loungers for your dog! Our current fav is The Weekender, the perfect rattan fold up chair that you can take to the beach or picnics and camping. You can shop directly off their website or pop into Habitat Home.

They adhere to a philosophy of ‘original creation with soul’ for their furniture, homewares and art. Visit this quaint little Australian cottage, just off the main street of Bangalow, to stock up on unique collectables, fabulous throws, wall hooks, leather plant holders, woven baskets, giant leather ottomans, cushions, log stools, towels and a raft of soft furnishings. You’ll also find beautifully made custom timber furniture, including the large-scale floor mirrors like those we have in The Bower. We love the hammocks and hanging chairs too. They’re so evocative of our casual, laidback beach lifestyle with the addition of a comfy leather cushion adding just the right touch of luxury.

This Island is awash with handcrafted textiles, quality linens, clothing, jewellery, wall hangings, fabulous carved candle holders, Indian marble bowls, recycled timber benches with a delightful ‘worn’ vibe but worn in a good way – authentic, unique, recycled, hand-crafted. Fashion-wise, you’ll find brands such as Mes Demoiselles, known for their flowing silk kimonos, dresses and blouses and some of The Bowers fav Golden Goose Deluxe shoes and boots. Or maybe fine beaded bracelet or a bold ceramic hand-crafted lamp is more your thing.

Like The Bower, they have a passion for mixing old and new as well as a relaxed, unstructured global look for their ethically sourced homewares and fashion store. Whether it’s wooden stools, carved timber tables, pendant lights and floor lamps, old doors and shutters, brass accessories and woven baskets, feather, shell and boneware, Bisque chooses to have their homewares and furniture made by artisans who hand craft each piece. They have their own fashion label too which is exclusive to Bisque as well as stocking brands such as Made in Mada, Estilo Emporio and Hunky Dory. We like that the Brauer family, the owners/creatives behind Bisque, are on a mission to educate customers to purchase less and rather choose quality. Less is definitely more in their book.
